Homologate your career with TRA (Job Ready Program)

If you are in Australia or considering moving there to work in your professional field, skills recognition is a crucial step to ensure your abilities and experience are acknowledged in the country.

What is TRA and Why is It Important?

TRA (Trades Recognition Australia) is one of the entities responsible for assessing and recognizing the qualifications and skills of foreign professionals who wish to work in specialized trades in Australia. Recognition through TRA is essential for those seeking employment in industries such as construction, electrical work, plumbing, and other specialized trades.

What is the Job Ready Program (JRP)?

The JRP is an employment-based skills assessment program designed for international graduates with an Australian qualification verified through a Provisional Skills Assessment. This program provides:

  • The opportunity to develop your skills.
  • Work experience in an Australian workplace environment.
  • A skills assessment outcome to present to the Department of Home Affairs when applying for a skilled visa.

A skills assessment confirms whether you have the necessary skills and experience to work in Australia in your occupation.

Step-by-Step Guide to the Job Ready Program

With the TRA Job Ready Program, there are four steps in total. These steps begin as soon as international students complete their trade courses and typically conclude approximately one year after Step 2 has been initiated.

  • Step 1 – Provisional Skills Assessment (PSA)

The Provisional Skills Assessment (PSA) is the first step of the Job Ready Program (JRP). The purpose of the PSA is to verify the authenticity of your Australian qualification and any prior employment and/or vocational placement you have completed in an Australian workplace environment. A successful PSA outcome is required before you can proceed to Step 2: Job Ready Employment (JRE).

  • Step 2 – Job Ready Employment (JRE)

Job Ready Employment (JRE) is the second stage of the Job Ready Program (JRP). The purpose of JRE is to enable you to gain experience in an Australian workplace environment to further develop skills related to your occupation.

From Step 2 to Step 4, the program must be completed within 12 months from the start date of your Step 2 application.

Eligibility

  • Hold and submit an application for a visa that grants full work rights and is valid for more than 12 months (typically a 485 visa).
  • Be within 4 months of completing your student visa.
  • Have secured eligible employment during your Provisional Skills Assessment (PSA).

Step 3 – Job Ready Workplace Assessment (JRWA)

In Step 3, an assessor from a Registered Training Organization (RTO) approved by TRA will conduct an assessment of the tasks you have performed during your employment, as detailed in your Employment Verification Report (EVR) and Skills Progress Report (SPR).

If you have completed 863 hours of paid employment over a 6-month period, the RTO assessor will evaluate your skill level by reviewing your job responsibilities and feedback from your supervisor. This ensures that you have achieved the skill level required for your occupation.

The goal of this step is to demonstrate that you have worked in your role for a minimum of 6 months as outlined in Step 2.

  • Step 4 – Job Ready Final Assessment (JRFA)

The Job Ready Final Assessment (JRFA) is the final step in the Job Ready Program (JRP). After completing 1,725 hours of employment over a 12-month period, you can apply for a full skills assessment. In this step, the relevant assessing authority will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your skills in the nominated occupation.

    Practical Tips

    • Research and fully understand the TRA requirements for your specific profession.
    • Ensure all your documentation is complete and accurate before submission.
    • Stay updated on any changes to TRA procedures or requirements.
    • Seek proper guidance and information from a Registered Migration Agent about your pathway to Permanent Residency (PR). They possess deep knowledge of the procedures and migration policies updated annually.
    • From selecting the right course for PR to identifying the correct workplace and choosing the appropriate state nomination stream, a Registered Migration Agent can provide precise and valuable advice for your PR journey.

Validating your profession with TRA is a crucial step in building a successful professional career in Australia!
