An overview of upcoming changes to the new Sponsor 482 Visa in Australia for 2024, as part of the 10-year Migration Strategy.
In December 2023, the Australian Government announced a 10-year Migration Strategy for Australia, and one of the most significant changes expected in 2024 relates to the 482 Sponsorship Visa.
According to the Australian Government, the new Migration Strategy aims to reorient Australia’s skilled worker migration system towards developing an innovative and efficient workforce for the country’s future.
“We need a system that encourages, rather than impedes, workers in emerging occupations from joining the Australian workforce” – Technology Council of Australia.
New Visa Sponsor482 – Changes November 2024
A new three-tier system of visa pathways will replace the current Visa sponsor TSS 482 in 2024. Here’s what you need to know about this new scheme and the basic eligibility criteria for each pathway:
1 – Specialized Skills Pathway
Available to highly qualified professionals who meet general eligibility criteria (e.g. being nominated by an approved employer, meeting health and character requirements) and who:
- Be in any occupation, except trades workers, machinery operators and drivers, and laborers.
Earn or are offered at least $135,000 (the Skilled Skills Threshold) and no less than Australian workers in the same occupation.
2 – Core Skills Pathway
the general eligibility criteria (practically the same as the current 482 visa) and that:
- Have an occupation on the new Essential Skills Occupations List (which includes occupations such as trades workers, machine operators, and drivers, for example).
- Earn a salary equal to or higher than TSMIT, that is, between $73,150 and $135,000.
3 – Essential Skills Pathway
It focuses on a more regulated pathway for lower-wage workers with essential skills vital to maintaining Australians’ living standards and where persistent shortages exist.
- For those earning less than $70,000.
- The Government will further evaluate how to develop and implement this visa pathway.
Key Change: Reduction of Work Experience Requirement
Under current regulations, applicants for the 482 visa must demonstrate at least two years of relevant work experience in the nominated occupation. However, starting in November 2024, this requirement will be reduced to just one year . This change is intended to:
- Improve Flexibility: Reducing the work experience requirement provides more flexibility for both employers and prospective employees, allowing faster access to a greater pool of talent.
- Encouraging Skilled Migration: By lowering barriers to entry, Australia hopes to attract more skilled workers who can contribute to the economy and fill critical skills gaps.
- Supporting Economic Recovery: In the face of global economic challenges, this policy is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Australia’s workforce and support recovery efforts.
Implications for Employers and Applicants
For employers, the new policy means a greater selection of potential candidates. Companies facing skills shortages can streamline the hiring process and benefit from the diversity of skills that international workers bring.
This change is particularly beneficial for applicants. It allows skilled workers with less experience but high potential to qualify for the visa.
Here are some practical steps to consider if you plan to apply:
- Update Your Credentials: Ensure your qualifications and work experience are well documented and aligned with the requirements of the nominated occupation.
- Seek Guidance: Consulting with an immigration agency can offer clarity and assistance in navigating the application process. Uvision can provide expert advice tailored to your situation.
- Prepare for a Smooth Transition: Understanding the Australian labor market and employer expectations will help you integrate more effectively once you arrive.
The reduction of the work experience requirement for the 482 visa from two years to one year marks a significant and positive shift in Australia’s immigration policy. It underlines the country’s commitment to attracting skilled talent and supporting economic growth. For skilled workers aspiring to build a future in Australia, this change presents a valuable opportunity to embark on a rewarding path with fewer barriers.
When will these changes come into effect?
According to the Action Plan published by the government, the changes to the new Visa sponsor 482 will come into effect at the end of November 2024. Until then, nothing changes!
IMPORTANT: If you are applying for a 482 visa before the end of 2024, all current requirements and legislation remain in effect. Since no one really knows what the new three pathways will require for applicants, we recommend that you submit your TSS 482 visa application as soon as possible to avoid any changes that may negatively impact you.
If you already hold a TSS 482 visa, none of the announcements will affect your current visa, even when they are implemented.
